{Minor} Master Bath Renovation
We recently tackled our dated master bath to give it a refresh. A large renovation is out of our budget at this point, so we tried to find the balance of doing minor updates for the least amount of money & biggest transformation. This is what we started with:
Vanity
Just like in our hall bathroom update, I decided to paint the existing vanity before the granite people arrived to install. This time, I chose BM Gray Owl. We kept the hardware & faucet, since they were newer. The granite is a remnant piece from Atlanta Stone Creations.
Lighting
The lights in here were hideous (as with most of the lights in our house). West Elm was having a sale, & I was able to get 2 of these Fabric Shade flushmount drums for $120! The other light is in our hallway & looks amazing.
The sconces are from Lowe’s & were $50 each.
Shiplap
Our first attempt to “shiplap” a wall! In some respects, it was simple, but the way these walls were cut up made it very difficult the ensure the planks were even. Though I thought I wanted to go all the way up on each wall, I settled with going about 1/3 up the wall & painting 2 different colors on the top & bottom. The exception was behind the vanity- we went all the way to the ceiling to add interest.
If I could do it over, I would have sanded the top & bottom of each plank before securing to the wall. The edges were a little frayed, causing the paint to look “clumpy” in some spots between planks. I learned how to use a nail gun & am now a “pro” (loose term) with the miter saw. I feel so powerful using those tools but also dumb when I can’t make something work. Thankful for a patient hubby who missed his calling as an excellent teacher.
Paint
With this particular bathroom, I chose all Benjamin Moore colors. The vanity is Gray Owl, the lower planks are White Dove, and upper wall is Chelsea Gray. All colors I would do again!
My Carpenter
My husband is so talented & threw together our towel hanger in minutes with a piece of reclaimed wood!
Replacing the vent fan, however, was an all-day, never-ending nightmare that involved a couple of trips to Lowe’s, pulling out all the tools, and eventually creating a “frame” to hide the gaps around the fan. I like how it turned out, even though it’s not what we expected.
Trim
Mr. Carpenter also took on the task of re-trimming our doorways & windows. A seemingly easy task that again, took far longer due to uneven areas & so many cuts. The joys of owning an older house…
Oh, and we discovered a roach infestation as we pulled apart the walls. Yayyyyy…..
We love our bathroom now! It turned out so well, and cost very little, comparatively. Here is a breakdown:
- Granite (including sink & install) ~ $500
- Lighting~ $170
- Plywood for shiplap + wood for trim ~ $100
- Paint ~ $50
- Shower curtain, rod, and hooks ~ $100
- Mirror ~ $50
Total: $970

Ridiculously awesome! Love these colors?
Thanks Jenny!
What kind of granite did y’all use? I love the color!
It is Colonial White- I think fairly common! We were able to find 2 remnant pieces for the bathrooms, which gave us a great discount.
Great transformation and update for very little $. I love the different textures.
Where did you get your mirror from? I am looking for the same color wood for my bathroom.
Hi Tina,
I think I replied to you on Pinterest, but if you didn’t get the message- I got the mirror at Hobby Lobby. Hope that helps!
