How many of us would love to change the style of rooms in our home, but simply don’t have a big budget to do so? Here are some practical tips to up your style, bring excitement to a room, and maximize your budget!
This can be a controversial item between a couple! One may love lots of pillows and the other may think they just get in the way. (I think of the movie Along Came Polly, where Ben Stiller’s character flips out about having to take 20 throw pillows off his bed each night!) However, in moderation, pillows can completely change a room.
Have an ugly sofa, but can’t afford to buy a new one? Load it up with some beautiful pillows! I love down stuffed pillows, because they are so much easier to mold & shape to look cushy. Mix up colors, too! I recently bought new pillows for our sitting room sofa, and they are a variety of mauve, tan, & gray. The room also has a mix of blues, black, white, and gray, but all the colors just add interest.
A rug is great anchor to pull all the furniture in a room together. There are so many affordable rugs now, and my favorite place to shop for them is on rugsusa.com. Coupon codes for discounts are frequently available, and they have so many options.
For example, this rug is $266 (including shipping!) for an 8×10. Rugs USA also has the popular jute rugs, which I am fond of.
Never underestimate the power of lighting. If you only have overhead lights, you probably feel like you’re being interrogated at night! Vary the levels of lighting- floor, table, ceiling, and even sconces if you can. I’ve seen gorgeous lighting options at Home Goods, for around $40/lamp.
This table lamp is $60 from Wayfair, and can add pretty color to your room!
Oh, how I long to be a plant lady with a beautiful garden & the ability to keep everything alive and thriving. It’s a big struggle for me to keep plants alive. The great news is that there are many house plants that can survive in harsh conditions, ha! I love browsing the indoor plant sections at Home Depot or Pike’s Nursery. Stick small plants on an end table, a bookshelf, or coffee table. There are beautiful fiddle leaf figs at Home Depot now for around $30-$40, that would look gorgeous near a sunny window!
For those areas that get almost no natural light, or if you just don’t think your plants will stay alive, stock up on faux plants! It’s almost hard to tell what’s real & what’s fake anymore. Home Goods has pretty small potted plants, and Hobby Lobby has beautiful long stems to create your own arrangement.
Curtains are like the jewelry to an outfit. They are the finishing pieces that complete the room. When measuring for curtains, make sure they are long enough to pool, touch, or barely hover above the floor. You don’t want any highwaters.
No need to spend a lot of money on curtains, especially when you have a tight budget. Target, Home Goods, Wayfair, and Hobby Lobby all have good options for around $30 per panel. Each of those places also has good prices for rods.
I purchased the ones above from Target, and I would buy them all over again! You can find them here.
I hope this helps you with next steps in sprucing up your room! Let me know if you need help picking out specific pieces that will fit within your budget. I love a challenge!!
